Mazda believe that ‘colour is an element of form’ and therefore focus on developing colours that highlight the ‘beauty and quality of its KODO designs’. Mazda Motor Corporation therefore has developed a new body colour: ‘Soul Red Crystal’. The new colour will make its debut on the all-new Mazda CX-5, which launches in February and then rolled out to new and existing models.
The Soul Red Crystal is an advancement from the Soul Red but with ‘20 percent greater colour saturation and 50 percent more depth than Soul Red, for a fresher, lustrous transparency’. In addition, the new paint features a highly saturated red pigment, for a deeper richer red and ‘extremely thin aluminium light-absorbing flakes that intensify shaded areas’. These improvements are due to a ‘simple three-layer structure comprising clear, translucent and reflective coats’. A reflective absorptive layer is applied to the body, with a translucent layer before a clear top coat is added. This process allows Mazda to ‘combine colouring and functionality’.
