The Mazda MX-5 RF epitomizes the brand’s ‘fun to drive’ character, but how does it feel when you’re not sitting behind the wheel?

In a slightly different test than usual, Auto Express have taken to the passenger’s seat, and brought the Mazda MX-5 RF onto the road, along with the Mazda MX-5 “for company”, to analyse ride performance.

The first thing Auto Express note is that the Mazda MX-5 “RF looks incredibly sleek” and “more expensive than its expected £21,000 price”; urging people to think of this model “predominantly as a coupe but with an occasional supply of fresh air” rather than a “hard-roof drop-top like the previous Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe”.

Once inside, the ride is smooth and relaxing “thanks to the insulated roof parts made of plastic, [which makes] the Fastback [quieter] and more comfortable than the soft-top roadster”. Furthermore, due to the steering and suspension having been slightly altered “to work with the [Mazda MX-5] RF’s additional 40kg, [its] softer than the standard roadster”.

The Mazda MX-5 RF will be made available to order this autumn, and Auto Express would “wager that the first [ones] to hit the road will be admired as much as the Mazda MX-5 was in the early nineties”.
